The Israel-Hamas conflict that began in October of 2023 is still unfolding almost a year later. The situation is currently in near constant escalation, with injuries and casualties continuously increasing.
According to Al Jazeera, as of 8 Sept. 2024, in Gaza there have been a predicted 41,455 deaths, in addition to 1,139 deaths in Israel. There have also been approximately 716 deaths in the Occupied West Bank. In total, there have been about 110,408 injuries between the two sides, with 10,000 people reported missing in Gaza. In addition, much of the infrastructure in Gaza has been damaged, with the approximate cost totaling to about 18.5 billion USD.
The conflict has developed to involve regions beyond those initially entangled, with allies stepping in on both sides. Hezbollah, a Lebanese paramilitary group, that is classified as a terrorist organization, stepped into the conflict as well, attacking Israel in a show of support for Palestine. As a result, Israel has launched attacks, including airstrikes on Lebanon which are concentrated on Hezbollah members, but affect civilians as well. Iran is also supporting the Palestinian people, with civilians donating over 30 million dollars to Palestinians, as noted by the Tehran Times. Additionally, they have recently, launched a missile offensive against Israel, further intensifying the conflict.
Recent developments have included more airstrikes on Gaza, resulting in many civilian injuries and deaths, and exploding walkie-talkies and pagers. The exploding devices have resulted in far-spread damage, with Hamas members in Palestine, and Hezbollah members in Lebanon and Syria also being targeted, and civilians injured or dying as a result. Additionally, there have been 492 deaths in Lebanon as a result of a recent Israeli airstrike.
Despite the catastrophic effects of the conflict on both sides, according to experts at the UN, there is no end in sight. In addition to the numerous deaths and injuries, many have been both internationally and internally displaced, resulting in millions of refugees. With both sides responsible for much violence and civilian attacks, the conflict continues to grow more tragic, and more complex. Earlier this year, Chef de Cabinet of the Secretary-General of the UN Courtenay Rattray said, “This terrible war must end,” a statement which still stands true.
