by Lily Grabowski and Hiruni Manawadu
On October 3rd and 4th, film maker and musician Kaoru Ishibashi, known by his performance name as Kishi Bashi, visited Pace Academy. He performed for the entire school and also spent time with the strings classes. During the classes, he played small portions of his songs, improvised new songs, and showed us different types of music from around the world.
After his time with the MS strings class, we had a chance to speak with him about his music. Here are the questions and answers about his career
Hiruni and Lily: What is your favorite part of being a musical artist?
Kishi Bashi: I love creating and improvising but my favorite part is definitely performing in front of people.
Hiruni and Lily: How long have you been playing the violin?
Kishi Bashi: I have been playing for four decades.
Hiruni and Lily: Have you ever thought about quitting?
Kishi Bashi: Definitely yes. Sometimes when something new was really hard to learn I might want to quit but I am glad that I stuck with it because if I hadn’t I might not have been in the place I am now.
Hiruni and Lily: Do you play any other instruments?
Kishi Bashi: Yes I play the guitar.
Hiruni and Lily: What is your favorite style of music?
Kishi Bashi: Jazz. Definitely.
Hiruni and Lily: Who was an idol you had growing up?
Kishi Bashi: Madonna
It was really an honor interviewing Kishi Bashi and getting to see him perform at our school. Thank you for reading and be sure to check out his music on Spotify and Amazon Music.
