The Pace wrestling team began varsity competition today with matches against Lovett, Redan, Clarkston, and Walnut Grove, in that order. With five wrestlers playing in the elite eight football game this Friday, the team competed with just seven wrestlers today, which meant the Knights would forfeit up to seven of fourteen weight classes. Full teams from Lovett and Walnut Grove proved to be too much to overcome, but wins against similarly small squads from Redan and Clarkston helped the Knights to a 2-2 record today.

Competing at 106 lbs. Chip Ratcliff pinned his opponent from Redan in 2:29 and collected forfeits against the other three teams. 113 pounder Eli Asher won a close match against Lovett by a score of 5-1 and then pinned his next three opponents in times of 3:25, 1:44, and 1:25 to finish a perfect 4-0 on the day. Alexander Holmann, competing at 120 lbs., lost his first match against Lovett and earned pins against Redan and Walnut Grove in times of 1:41 and 4:34, respectively. For his match against Clarkston he was bumped up a weight class and was losing to the larger wrestler until the third period. His conditioning prevailed and Alexander earned a quick takedown to take the lead followed by a pin in 5:01. He was 3-1 today. Wrestling at 126 lbs., Jonathon Boss split his matches today losing to Lovett and Walnut Grove, but taking a forfeit against Redan and pinning his Clarkston opponent in 4:52 with a nice bar arm. 138 pound freshman Frank Houser had the most exciting match of the day against a talented opponent from Lovett. The match was back and forth and after six minutes it was tied 4-4. Thirty seconds into overtime Frank got the takedown for the win. It was his only close match of the day as he pinned his next three opponents in times of 22 seconds, 1:19, and 26 seconds to finish a perfect 4-0. Jackson Fuller ran into pretty tough competition at 145 pounds. He also had to bump up to 152 against Redan. He fought hard in three tough losses and took a forfeit against Clarkston to finish 1-3. Wrestling at 170 lbs., Dustin Hadley split his matches. In his first match Dustin almost had his Lovett opponent pinned before an unfortunate roll put Dustin on his back. He lost that match and his match against Walnut Grove, but he had a nice cradle against Redan for a pin. After a forfeit against Clarkston Dustin finished 2-2.

Overall, it was a successful day for the Knights as the Pace wrestlers were a combined 20-8. Pace will compete again next Wednesday in the home opener against Westminster, Maynard Jackson, and Chattooga. The matches will be in Inman and will begin at 6pm. We hope to see you there!
