Kates will be leaving his beloved lacrosse field for a corner office.

Head lacrosse coach Tom Kates and Head of Upper School Michael Gannon are switching places. Mr. Gannon will once again be Coach Gannon and reclaim the reins of the lacrosse team. As for Mr. Kates, he will be officially announced as the new Head of Upper School on May 2. Mr. Kates made a statement to the Knightly News saying, “This was a very hard decision for me, but I think that I am the best person for the job. I will miss coaching lacrosse but I am looking forward to watching the games as Head of the Upper School.”  He added, “We’re going to make some changes around the high school: all basketball players must play lacrosse, and the basketball season has to end by the first day of lacrosse practice.” He added, “Around the school I’m going to institute stricter rules regarding cleanliness.”

Many students were shocked by the news. Junior lacrosse player Tate Schreiner said, “I never saw this coming, but it will be interesting to see how both do in their new positions.” Students are nervous about what Mr. Kates is going to bring to his new role. Mr. Kates has already announced that he will do away with AP classes, and his Foreign Affairs: Vietnam Era class will be made a mandatory requirement to graduate. It will be interesting to see how the new Upper School will fare under the leadership of Mr. Kates, and lacrosse players are eager to see how the team does under Coach Gannon once again.
