Describing Art

French C Honors students have been learning how to talk about and describe artwork, especially paintings.  Here, they worked with a partner to describe a painting and have their partner draw it without being able to see it.  Our results got recycled before we could take photos, but here we are working on it!

French A students reviewed the alphabet and the vocabulary for greetings with a match of “LICORNE!”.  Students compete to be the first to circle the correct word or letter/accent (as announced by the teacher or leader with the word in English, a clue, a picture, the letter pronounced in French etc.), always starting with their crayon in unicorn position and with the other hand behind the back.  Rules include “pas de violence” and “pas de disputes”, but sometimes things get just a little crazy.  The winner has the most correctly circled words in their crayon color at the end of the game.

French B students practiced vocabulary, grammar, and geography of French-speaking West Africa today with an activity designed to have them work together in teams to think about French in context as they solved a puzzle we call “Le Serpent”.


French A Lockers

Students in French A have been learning about gender, articles, and vocabulary for the classroom. This week they worked in teams of three to make giant lockers. They could put anything in their locker from our vocab list…including a teacher!

Ma Famille – French A

French A students have been studying the names for members of the family along with learning how to describe age and hair/eye color.  Today they listened to a description of an imaginary family and were asked to draw what they heard.  Afterwards, we all took turns describing parts of our pictures and one student drew the family on the board as we worked together to recreate orally what we had heard and drawn individually.  It was fun to see the different, yet accurate, interpretations of the same description!

Les Monstres: practicing body parts and adjectives

French B students work in pairs or teams of 3 this week to write a description of a monster using body parts and a variety of adjectives.  We then traded the descriptions with another team who had to draw the monster from the description given.  Finally, we gave the monster and description to a third team who was responsible for labeling the monster drawing in French.  Students practiced writing and reading comprehension at their level with this activity and had fun imagining and creating the monsters.

Mettons la table!

French B students are learning the vocabulary for place settings and reviewing how to give commands.  We had fun practicing these skills as a whole class and with a partner, creating masterpiece sculptures with plastic and paper dishware.

24-hour clock: Quelle heure est-il?

French A students practiced using the 24-hour clock system used on French schedules.  They manipulated “French alarm clocks” that I designed. While working as a whole class and then in pairs, they worked on going back and forth between “French style” and “American style” time.

French A students have been learning about discussing the objects in a classroom, where the objects are located, and what things they have in their lockers.  They designed an imaginary locker and its contents to practice their vocabulary.
