French B

Different modalities in Stations

French B students review for a quiz by working through different modalities (speaking, listening, reading, writing…plus some culture) in 3 different groups today.  Some students are correcting their own homework practice from a key I’ve given them and then doing a short reading about Provence and Marseille and comparing their own city in a chart,  a second group is reviewing vocab from this lesson (mettre le couvert) and mettre in the present tense with a game of Battleship, and the third group is reading a crazy place setting description while their partner draws and then switching roles.  Those finished the activity early practice asking and answering questions about their houses and meals by drawing cards from the bag at their station.

French A students also worked in stations to practice telling time and talking about the courses.  There stations included a grammar station, an interactive performance station where they worked with clocks, and a game station.

Honors French C students have had two days of stations, working on and presenting skits, completing some listening activities with a laptop station, practicing some speaking prompts, and reviewing vocabulary reflexive verbs in all tenses with the games of WAR and EIFFEL TOWER.

We all enjoyed a change of pace at the end of January!

mettre le couvert TPR practice

Paper Bears

French B students are learning vocabulary for shopping and clothing this week.  They’ve been practicing with a paper bear and his/her wardrobe.

French B 7th graders worked through how adjectives change and agree with their noun by putting them in categories the old fashioned way…scissors & glue.

Speed Dating

French B students practiced new vocabulary about shopping for clothing and recycled old vocab with an activity we call “speed dating”. Students spend 1-2 minutes facing a partner before moving to another desk, in a circular pattern.  On each desk they find a card that matches the card their partner has, giving them a task to accomplish through negotiation with their partner and practice. The next day, students were quizzed on one of the card sets, chosen at random.

Paper Bears

Screen Shot 2015-09-21 at 12.12.48 PMFrench B has just started a Unit about shopping and our first lesson includes clothing vocabulary. Today we practiced talking about what people (well….bears) wear by working as a whole class and also in smaller groups to describe clothing being worn.  First, I modeled for the students how to say what the bear is wearing (L’ours porte…). Students would describe to their classmates 5-7 items of clothing worn by the bear. All of the other students in the group or class would use the paper clothing cutouts to dress their bear.  Once the bear was dressed, another student would call back the correct outfit as a check.  We enjoyed giving the bear strange combinations of clothing and then all laughed, announcing “l’ours est nu” as he got ready for his next outfit of the day. #OOTD

Fall Semester 2014

I haven’t had a great deal of time to update the blog regularly this semester….busy schedule this year!  But that doesn’t mean we haven’t been having fun and learning a lot in French class so far!  Here are a few pictures…French 1 Upper Schoolers playing a vocab game where they have to grab the card I call out before the other people in their group, French B 7th graders doing some “color by number” sheets I picked up in Montréal over Fall Break, and French A 6th graders working with partners to practice the subject pronouns with a “tic tic boom” game and also working cooperatively to practice correct word order by reassembling different mixed-up sentences on their desks.
