French B students are learning the vocabulary for place settings and reviewing how to give commands.  We had fun practicing these skills as a whole class and with a partner, creating masterpiece sculptures with plastic and paper dishware.

24-hour clock: Quelle heure est-il?

French A students practiced using the 24-hour clock system used on French schedules.  They manipulated “French alarm clocks” that I designed. While working as a whole class and then in pairs, they worked on going back and forth between “French style” and “American style” time.

Morocco Presentations

French C Honors students did a reading and saw a video about Morocco last week.  We also studied a song by Algerian Raï artist, Khaled.  The students were then assigned a topic to research and present about.  Topics included things like traditions, holidays, food, clothing, geography, sports, and cool places to visit.  Two students brought in their version of fruit Briouats and I made Ghoriba (sesame cookies) for all to taste.  Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could all escape to Morocco for the rest of this cold winter?

Human Clocks

French A students were given 10 minutes to create a clock with certain labeling requirements (things like et demie, et quart, moins le quart). Then we worked in pairs to practice telling time using our hands…and feet…and heads…as the clock hands.  I called out certain times, for example “Il est cinq heures moins le quart” and students had to work together to show the correct times before I said Tic Tic Boom.  They earned a point for their team if they had the correct time displayed.  Another day, we will learn about the 24 hour clock, add those numbers, and practice how to “calculate” the time in the 12-hour clock.

French C Honors students have been working in small groups over the past few days to imagine a product that doesn’t exist and then create the commercial that markets their new product.  They were given a rubric with certain requirements, like using direct and indirect object pronouns, reflexive verbs, and commands. Here are the results of their work. I think they did a great job, particularly because I did not help them edit their scripts or plan their performance.
